Yankees' Spencer Jones Sidelined with Sore Foot Amid Injury Concerns

Rookie outfielder Spencer Jones was absent from the Yankees' lineup on Saturday due to a sore left foot and heel, a development that adds to the team's injury concerns. Jones, however, downplayed the issue, stating it was "no big deal" and attributed it to the effects of playing on Chase Field's turf the previous night, following an earlier jam of his heel in Minnesota.

This situation arises shortly after the Yankees placed star outfielder Aaron Judge on the injured list with a right calf strain, highlighting a challenging period for the team's roster depth. "Just a little banged up," Jones commented before Saturday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. "Playing on turf is different, hard on the feet."

Manager Aaron Boone also characterized the injury as day-to-day, noting that Jones remained available despite being scratched from the starting lineup. Boone opted to start José Caballero in center field instead of shifting Cody Bellinger, citing the cumulative toll of playing on turf and Bellinger's ongoing efforts.

In place of Judge, the Yankees called up Max Schuemann from the minor leagues, prioritizing defensive versatility for their bench as the playoffs approach. Boone suggested that Schuemann's stint might be temporary, potentially coinciding with the return of Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the injured list soon.

The Yankees' presence in Phoenix also offered a reunion opportunity with former teammate Jonathan Loáisiga, now a reliever for the Diamondbacks. Loáisiga, who has experienced a healthier season in Arizona after multiple injury-plagued years with the Yankees, has posted a 2.32 ERA in a career-high 64 games. Boone expressed happiness for Loáisiga's success, emphasizing the importance of his health.

Saturday's game also marked the Diamondbacks' 25th-anniversary celebration of their 2001 World Series team, which famously defeated the Yankees in a seven-game series.
