Yankees' Season Ends in ALDS Sweep by Rays
Tampa Bay defeats New York 4-3 in Game 3, marking a second consecutive playoff exit in the second round.
The New York Yankees' 2026 season concluded in disappointment Tuesday night as they were swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS, losing Game 3 by a score of 4-3 at Yankee Stadium. This marks the second consecutive year the Yankees have been eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by a division rival.
Like the previous season, the Yankees advanced past the Red Sox in the wild-card round but were unable to overcome a division champion in the subsequent series. The Rays secured the sweep with their victory in Game 3.
Yankees pitcher Max Fried pitched six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, including two home runs, while striking out seven batters. The decisive blow came in the top of the sixth inning when Victor Mesa Jr. hit a two-run homer 401 feet to right field, giving the Rays a two-run lead.
Earlier in the sixth inning, a potential game-tying home run by Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe was overturned after review. As Mesa reached for the ball at the wall, a fan interfered, touching the ball before it could be caught. Umpires ruled fan interference, and Volpe was awarded an RBI double, but he was left stranded on base with the Yankees trailing.
In the bottom of the eighth, with the Yankees trailing by one run and a runner on base with two outs, manager Aaron Boone called on Giancarlo Stanton to pinch-hit for Austin Wells. However, Rays right-hander Kevin Kelly struck Stanton out on five pitches to end the threat.
Bryan Baker closed out the Yankees in the ninth inning to seal the series victory for the Rays.
