Yankees Recall Pitchers, Keep Carlos Lagrange Off Roster for Friday Doubleheader
Prospect Carlos Lagrange not available to pitch Friday, remains a potential postseason option as Yankees manage pitcher availability.
The New York Yankees have recalled pitchers Yerry de los Santos and Brendan Beck for their Friday doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles, opting against calling up prospect Carlos Lagrange. Beck is slated to start the first game, while de los Santos is expected to provide length out of the bullpen.
Lagrange, a hard-throwing 23-year-old, will not be available to pitch on Friday. He recently threw live batting practice on Wednesday as part of the Yankees' "stay-ready" group. The team is proceeding cautiously with Lagrange, who is still recovering from a shoulder sprain, even as they consider him for a potential postseason roster spot.
"He had an injury, and he’s just started throwing lives again," manager Aaron Boone said. "He threw live two days ago, so he’s not in play right now. Could be down the road, but he’s not in play yet."
With the possibility of Sunday's regular-season finale being canceled due to an incoming Nor'easter, and the Yankees planning to call up Elmer Rodríguez for pitching depth if the game is played, Lagrange's chances of appearing in a regular-season game appear slim.
Should the Yankees decide to call Lagrange up for his MLB debut in the playoffs, he would become the seventh player in the modern era to do so. The team is focused on managing its relievers ahead of the postseason, with Will Warren also set to be used in a limited capacity for Game 2 of the doubleheader to keep him available for Tuesday’s wild-card series opener.
