Yankees' Postseason Ends as Rays Advance; Wells' Lineup Change Fails to Spark Offense
Austin Wells, moved up in the order for Game 3, went hitless as the Yankees were eliminated by the Rays.
The New York Yankees' 2026 season concluded with a 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 3 of the American League Division Series, eliminating the team from the postseason. A lineup adjustment that saw Austin Wells moved up to sixth in the batting order did not yield the desired offensive result, as Wells went hitless in three at-bats before being removed for a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.
Wells had shown flashes of his potential throughout the playoffs, entering Game 3 with a .417 batting average (5-for-12) with two doubles, four RBIs, and two sacrifice flies across the first four games. This performance, despite a largely disappointing regular season where he hit .186 with a .624 OPS, earned him the promotion in the lineup. However, the move proved unsuccessful in the do-or-die Game 3.
The Yankees' offensive struggles were a recurring theme in the series, with only two runs scored in the first two games, both coming from solo home runs by Ben Rice. Prior to Game 3, the team also engaged in bunting practice, a drill not regularly utilized during the season, as they sought to generate more offense.
Another lineup change saw Spencer Jones, who had batted cleanup in the previous playoff games, dropped to eighth. Jones, who entered Game 3 batting 2-for-15 with seven strikeouts in the postseason, fared better than Wells, going 1-for-2 with an RBI double, two walks, and a run scored.
Despite the offensive struggles and the team's early exit, Wells has maintained the respect of his teammates for his approach and development. Pitcher Gerrit Cole had noted earlier in the series that Wells is highly respected within the clubhouse for how he handles himself and continues to improve.
The Yankees' inability to advance further marked another disappointing end to their season, as they were swept by the Rays in the ALDS. Wells, a catcher, continued to receive praise for his handling of the pitching staff throughout the ups and downs of the season and the playoffs.
