Yankees' Manager Weighs Lineup Decision for Playoff Opener

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone is contemplating a lineup decision for Game 1 of the American League wild-card series that could see utility player Anthony Volpe starting at second base over Jazz Chisholm Jr. The choice hinges on facing the opposing team's left-handed pitcher, Payton Tolle, a scenario that echoes a similar decision from last year's playoffs.

Chisholm expressed his desire to play, stating, "As a competitor, who wouldn’t be? It’s the playoffs, you want to play." He was notably disappointed last year when he was kept out of the Game 1 lineup against a left-handed pitcher. While Chisholm started both regular-season games against Tolle this year, the Yankees' roster composition and Chisholm's recent return from a thumb injury are factors Boone is considering. Chisholm has had limited plate appearances since returning from the injured list.

Boone acknowledged the possibility of platooning the second base position. "Volpe is very much in play," Boone said Monday. "The platoon stuff is in play there. Obviously Jazz is just coming back from the thumb. He was able to get a couple games in, would have liked another one or two, but the weather didn’t really cooperate this weekend. Anthony’s put himself very much in the mix to be a part of the equation."

Despite a challenging contract year, Chisholm had been performing well before his injury. He indicated he would understand the strategic rationale for platooning based on matchups but emphasized the unique nature of playoff baseball.

In other team news, pitcher Ryan Weathers threw live batting practice on Monday. His availability for Game 1 is unlikely due to a recent left forearm flexor strain, but he could potentially be an option for subsequent games if he makes the roster. The team is also evaluating reliever Tim Hill, who is expected to be available for all three games.

On the opposing Red Sox roster, pitcher Garrett Crochet is attempting an expedited rehab from a shoulder injury sustained in April, with his participation dependent on the team's final roster decision. Manager Chad Tracy expressed more optimism about catcher Willson Contreras, who has recovered from a bruised hand and returned to the lineup.
