Yankees Fan's Interference Catch Sparks Controversy, Ends Season
A new video angle shows the fan's excitement before the call was overturned, leading to the Yankees' ALDS elimination.
A controversial spectator interference call on a fan's catch of an Anthony Volpe fly ball in Game 3 of the American League Division Series (ALDS) ended the New York Yankees' season. The incident occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning, with the Yankees trailing 4-3. New video footage offers a different perspective on the fan's reaction immediately after securing the ball.
The fan, wearing a dark blue Yankees bomber jacket, is seen pumping his fist in the air and celebrating with those around him as the ball is displayed. The crowd erupted in excitement, and the fan appeared to be a focal point of the celebration on the big screen replay.
However, the celebration was short-lived. Following a lengthy review, Major League Baseball determined that the fan's actions constituted interference. The league issued a statement defending the decision, asserting that "definitively determined the spectator interfered with the ball over the field of play" after examining "all relevant angles."
MLB's statement clarified, "The ball would not have left the playing field nor would it have been caught. The call is OVERTURNED, there was spectator interference and no home run." The play was ultimately ruled an RBI double, which kept the Yankees trailing.
The Yankees ultimately lost Game 3, resulting in an ALDS sweep by the Tampa Bay Rays. Following the game, the fan who made the catch was escorted out of the stadium by security and NYPD officers.
The Rays will advance to the ALCS to face either the Cleveland Guardians or the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox currently lead that series 2-1.
