Yankees Fall to Rays 1-0 in ALDS Game 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The New York Yankees' offense was silenced by a dominant pitching performance from Drew Rasmussen, and a single mistake by Gerrit Cole proved to be the difference in a 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday.

Rasmussen was nearly perfect, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out batters. The Rays' lone run came in the third inning when Jonathan Aranda hit a home run off Cole.

Cole, pitching on nine days of rest, held the Rays in check for much of his outing. He allowed five hits and a walk while striking out five batters over five innings. However, the home run to Aranda on a 2-2 changeup was the pitch he regretted.

"It’s a pretty steep price to pay," Cole said after the game. "He crushed it. That’s just the way it goes."

Despite the loss, Cole's performance was solid against a Rays lineup known for its ability to make pitchers work. His final batter of the game, Junior Caminero, engaged in an 11-pitch at-bat before Cole ultimately struck him out with a knuckle-curve.

After 82 pitches, manager Aaron Boone opted to remove Cole from the game. Boone had previously shown a tendency to pull his pitchers early, as seen in the wild-card series. Cole stated that he and Boone were "on the same page" regarding the decision.

Boone acknowledged that Cole "got us off to a good start" but noted that the Rays "made him work." The manager also pointed to potential warning signs, such as Aranda's leadoff single in the fourth inning, prompting him to begin warming up relievers.

The Yankees' bullpen provided three scoreless, hitless innings in relief, with Ryan Weathers, Paul Blackburn, and Brent Headrick combining to keep the deficit at one run. However, the Yankees' offense could not break through against Rasmussen, who earned the win for the Rays.

"That was a lot of fun," Cole acknowledged about the pitching duel. "He was unbelievable."
