Yankees Expected to Extend Qualifying Offer to Closer Bednar, Not Chisholm
The club is reportedly preparing to make a $23.15 million offer to David Bednar but is unlikely to do the same for Jazz Chisholm Jr.
The New York Yankees are anticipated to extend a $23.15 million qualifying offer to free-agent closer David Bednar, who is coming off a strong season. Sources indicate that the team is also considering extending the same offer to second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., although it is considered unlikely.
Despite a notable 30-30 season in 2025, word within the Yankees organization suggests that management may be inclined to move on from Chisholm. Chisholm has expressed a desire to remain with the team following their recent playoff elimination. However, team leadership reportedly believes it is time for a change, though they also acknowledge the possibility of Chisholm accepting the offer given his stated preference to stay.
Bednar, on the other hand, had a "terrific year" for the Yankees, prompting the expectation of a qualifying offer. This offer represents a significant financial commitment for the upcoming season.
Other players expected to receive qualifying offers include Randy Arozarena of the Mariners, Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs, Brandon Lowe of the Pirates, and Trevor Rogers of the Rangers. These offers are a standard mechanism in Major League Baseball for teams to retain the rights to their free agents, requiring players to accept the offer or test the open market, potentially with compensation for the team if they sign elsewhere.
