New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells will honor the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks by wearing specially designed equipment during a game against the New York Mets. The gear, featuring New York City Fire Department (FDNY) logos and wordmarks, will be worn for the final "Subway Series" contest of the 2026 season.
The front of Wells' chest protector will display "FDNY," with the department's logo on the sides. Above "FDNY," the words "Never Forget" will be visible, and the backside of the protector will feature Wells' number, 28, incorporated into a fireman's cross.
Following the game, the equipment, manufactured by EvoShield, will be auctioned, with all proceeds benefiting the FDNY. This marks the second time the Yankees and Mets have played on September 11, with the previous instance occurring in 2021 for the 20th anniversary of the attacks.
MLB-wide tributes are planned for the anniversary. Players, managers, coaches, and umpires will wear special caps adorned with a "We Shall Never Forget" side patch. Pregame ceremonies will be held across the country, including at Yankee Stadium.
In the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks, Major League Baseball postponed games for several weeks. The Mets played their first game back in New York on September 21, 2001, with Mike Piazza hitting a decisive home run. The Yankees returned to their home field on September 25, 2001, and went on to reach the World Series that year, ultimately losing in seven games to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
