The New York Yankees are facing a significant challenge in solidifying their bullpen for the upcoming postseason with the placement of reliever Fernando Cruz on the injured list due to right elbow discomfort. The normally reliable right-handed pitcher was sidelined Wednesday, with the team awaiting MRI results to determine the full extent of his injury.
Cruz's absence exacerbates concerns about the bullpen's depth, especially after the Yankees did not acquire additional relievers at the trade deadline. Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged that Cruz's injury, coupled with the departure of other players, has opened up opportunities for other pitchers to claim roles for potential October innings.
"There’s a couple of spots semi up for grabs now with some guys going down and some opportunities created," Boone said.
Previously unavailable players like Kervin Castro, who was sidelined with right elbow neuritis that may require surgery, have also been moved to the 60-day injured list, further thinning the available pitching staff.
Several pitchers are vying for crucial roles in the bullpen. Clarke Schmidt is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and recently threw live batting practice, which is expected to lead to a rehabilitation assignment. While Boone is not anticipating Schmidt pitching on back-to-back days this year, the team has been encouraged by his progress.
Ryan Weathers is also a potential bullpen piece, though a recent flexor strain has put him in a no-throw period. If he can ramp up his recovery, he could become a significant contributor. Pitcher Will Warren is another name in the bullpen discussion, despite currently remaining in the rotation.
Angel Chivilli, who experienced a setback after an August blowup and subsequent IL stint for elbow issues, has begun a throwing program. "So far, so good," Boone said of Chivilli's progress.
Luis Gil, returning from a shoulder injury, is being built up as a reliever, and his fastball velocity has shown improvement in shorter outings. In recent appearances with minor league affiliates, Gil has thrown scoreless innings with encouraging strike-throwing and fastball command.
Veterans Yerry De los Santos and Ryan Yarbrough, who have performed in their respective roles, remain options. Additionally, Michael Fulmer and Justin Topa have been signed and activated, bringing veteran presence and the possibility of filling leverage situations.
"They’re probably going to jump in the deep end," Boone said of the newly acquired veterans. "It’s that time of year. And the reality is on any given day … they’re going to find themselves in leverage situations. We like some of the traits that some of these guys have and excited about some of the guys we brought in that are going to get an opportunity to try and grab a role."
