The New York Yankees demonstrated an ability to overcome left-handed pitching in a 5-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday at Petco Park. The win, achieved even without the imminent return of Aaron Judge, was fueled by a strong offensive performance against Padres left-hander Robbie Ray and a solid outing from pitcher Carlos Rodón.

Ben Rice was a standout, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances with three hits and two walks. Spencer Jones, now the full-time center fielder following Trent Grisham's placement on the injured list, contributed two hits off Ray. Cody Bellinger, noted for his success against lefties, delivered a two-run single that capped a four-run second inning, giving the Yankees an early advantage.

Ray's command faltered, issuing four walks, and the Yankees capitalized, building a 5-0 lead before holding on. Rodón, pitching five innings of one-run ball, matched his highest strikeout total since June 17 with seven Ks, while also walking three batters. The bullpen, including Michael Fulmer, Brent Headrick, John Schreiber, and Tim Hill, effectively protected the lead, combining for three-hit relief.

The Yankees initiated their scoring in the second inning. Rice led off with a single, and after advancing on a groundout, Jones doubled to give New York a 1-0 lead. Following a series of walks, including one that forced in a run, Bellinger's single extended the lead to 4-0. The Yankees forced Ray to throw 42 pitches in that inning before he could escape further damage.

In the third, Rice walked and advanced on a hit-and-run single. A sacrifice fly then increased the Yankees' lead to 5-0. Jones' second hit off Ray knocked the pitcher out of the game after just 2 1/3 innings. Griffin Canning relieved Ray and managed to limit further scoring by inducing a double play with the bases loaded.

Despite stranding 12 runners and missing opportunities to extend their lead in later innings, the Yankees' pitching held firm. Rodón settled in after some early trouble, retiring eight consecutive batters before Manny Machado hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, accounting for the Padres' only run.

The victory kept the Yankees (81-61) four games behind the Rays in the division and 3 1/2 games ahead of the Red Sox for the top American League wild card spot with 20 games remaining in the regular season. The team is set to face former teammate Michael King on Sunday, with Gerrit Cole scheduled to pitch for the Yankees in the series finale.
