The Yankees showed no signs of a postseason hangover as they returned to the field Tuesday, securing an 8-1 victory against the Minnesota Twins. The win came after the team's playoff-clinching celebration, with Cody Bellinger and Spencer Jones contributing home runs and pitcher Max Fried delivering one of his best starts since returning from the injured list.
Despite the victory, the Yankees (88-63) remain 3 1/2 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East race with 11 games remaining in the regular season. The Rays continued their winning streak, maintaining their lead in the division standings.
Strong Pitching and Offensive Support
Max Fried pitched seven innings for the first time since April 22, allowing just one run and six hits while recording six strikeouts and no walks. This marked his first win since April 27. Fried's performance was a significant improvement from his previous start, where he struggled against the Rockies.
The Yankees' offense provided ample support, tallying 14 hits against the Twins' pitching staff. Every player in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit. Ben Rice initiated the scoring with a first-inning single, followed by Cody Bellinger's two-run homer that gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
The Twins managed to score one run in the bottom of the second inning after Royce Lewis reached on an infield single and later scored on an Emmanuel Rodriguez single. However, Fried ended the threat by picking off Rodriguez.
Key Hits Seal the Victory
In the top of the third, Heliot Ramos hit an RBI double to extend the Yankees' lead to 3-1. Ramos, wearing number 21 in honor of Roberto Clemente Day, went 2-for-4 with a walk while starting in place of Aaron Judge, who was given the day off.
Spencer Jones delivered the decisive blow in the sixth inning, launching a three-run home run off Taylor Rogers to make the score 7-1. This was Jones' third home run against a left-handed pitcher this season.
Fried's Resilience
Fried, who has been managing a pitch count in his fourth start since returning from a bone bruise in his left elbow, demonstrated improved command and effectiveness. His outing was a marked contrast to his previous start against the Rockies.
The Yankees lineup displayed a balanced attack, with multiple players contributing multi-hit performances. Bellinger reached base four times, and Heliot Ramos, George Lombard Jr., and Anthony Volpe each reached three times, underscoring the team's offensive depth in this matchup.
