Yankees Aim to Retain Pitching Coach Matt Blake Amid Contract Decisions
Following an MLB-best team ERA, the Yankees are looking to keep pitching coach Matt Blake as his contract nears its end.
The New York Yankees are prioritizing the retention of pitching coach Matt Blake, whose contract is set to expire after the 2026 season. This effort comes after the Yankees achieved the Major League Baseball's best team earned run average (ERA) at 3.23.
The team's strong pitching performance positions Blake favorably as contract negotiations approach. The second-best team ERA in MLB belonged to the Milwaukee Brewers, who finished with a 3.51 ERA.
Blake's tenure with the Yankees began in a volunteer capacity as an unpaid "bird dog" scout while he was simultaneously serving as the pitching coach at Lincoln-Sudbury High School, located outside of Boston. Now, he is in a position to potentially command a coaching salary close to $1 million annually.
