Xi Jinping's Unusual Demands During Trump Visit Revealed

Chinese leader Xi Jinping's visit to Washington during Donald Trump's presidency was marked by a series of unusual requests aimed at accommodating what aides perceived as physical limitations and a lack of stamina, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

These accommodations reportedly centered on Xi's need for rest, fueling ongoing speculation about his health. Aides for the Chinese president largely structured the schedule around his physical capacity and required breaks, former officials familiar with the planning told the Journal.

Among the specific requests was one for a private 'hold room' in the West Wing, where Xi could rest between events and only his wife, Peng Liyuan, was permitted to join him. This request was described as 'unusual' and unprecedented by Dennis Wilder, former senior China director at the National Security Council.

The need for rest led to the cancellation of a planned working lunch between Trump and Xi on September 24, creating a five-hour gap in the two-day visit. Xi's schedule also included a swift, ten-minute visit to the National Archives upon arrival, despite US officials preparing for a longer duration.

Eagle-eyed observers noted Xi's arrival, with footage showing him tightly clutching his wife's hand as he descended from his plane, prompting speculation about his need for support.

Speculation about Xi's health has been a recurring theme. In September, during the BRICS summit, rumors intensified after a video appeared to show Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pausing his speech to check on Xi's well-being. While it later emerged that Xi's translator's earpiece had malfunctioned, a report suggested he skipped a gala dinner hosted by Modi because he was unwell, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi attending in his stead.

Other instances contributing to health rumors include theories about a heart attack, cancer diagnosis, or stroke, though official explanations have often countered these. A photo from July 2024, purportedly showing Xi wincing in pain, was later identified as being from four months prior and related to a reaction to a drink.

During the visit, Trump made efforts to impress Xi, including completing construction of a new helicopter landing pad on the White House's South Lawn. The Trumps also broke with more than a decade of presidential protocol by personally greeting the Chinese delegation on the tarmac, a gesture underscoring the administration's focus on the bilateral relationship.

The visit included a glamorous State Dinner, one of the most high-profile events of the Trump administration, aimed at easing geopolitical friction. Trump characterized his relationship with Xi as a 'truly great friendship,' despite ongoing disputes between the two nations on issues such as trade and artificial intelligence.

The White House and a spokesperson for President Xi have been contacted for comment. Leaders' health is typically considered a state secret in China, and online criticism of President Xi or the Chinese Communist Party is heavily censored.
