Speculation regarding Chinese President Xi Jinping's health has resurfaced following his arrival in the United States for a state visit with President Donald Trump. Xi was greeted by Trump on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, a rare occurrence marking the first time in over six decades a U.S. president has personally welcomed a foreign leader at that location.

As Xi descended from his aircraft, online observers noted that he appeared to hold his wife, Peng Liyuan's, hand tightly. Some interpreted this as a sign of needing additional support on the plane's stairs. This observation comes shortly after Xi's absence from a gala dinner at the BRICS summit in India last week, which The Wall Street Journal reported was due to illness.

Exiled Chinese Democracy Party chairman Wanjun Xie commented on social media, stating that Xi's grip on his wife's hand and her apparent support suggested "aftereffects of a stroke." Another Chinese activist account echoed these sentiments, suggesting Xi was "unable to effectively support the full weight of his body."

Further fueling online discussion, a separate video appeared to show Trump wincing during a loud military flyover, while Xi displayed no discernible reaction. Online commentary included speculation about potential heart problems or hearing issues.

This is not the first time Xi's health has been the subject of public rumor, with past speculation involving heart attacks, cancer diagnoses, and strokes. During the BRICS summit, an incident where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared to pause his speech to check on Xi led to further conjecture. It was later clarified that the interruption was due to a malfunctioning earpiece for Xi's translator. However, the Wall Street Journal's report about Xi skipping the gala due to illness persisted.

Online speculation about Xi's health is persistent despite China's strict internet censorship, which typically removes criticism of the leadership. Leaders' health is considered a state secret in China.
