Xbox consoles have experienced a notable increase in price in the United Kingdom, with one model seeing a 43% jump. The Xbox Series X is now £170 more expensive, a rise largely driven by increasing costs for memory chips, according to reports.
These rising component prices are impacting not only gaming consoles but also graphics cards, which are essential for both consoles and gaming PCs. The demand for these components is partly fueled by the burgeoning artificial intelligence industry, which utilizes them for AI content generation and other applications.
This trend has drawn criticism from consumers who view the price hikes as excessive, especially for products released several years ago. Social media users have voiced strong disapproval, with one X user calling the new Xbox Series S price "absolutely disgusting" and a Reddit user describing it as "highway robbery for a console released 6 years ago."
Industry observers suggest that console prices may continue to climb. Jez Corden, an editor at Windows Central, commented on X that the current price increases may not represent the peak. The rising hardware costs could also influence consumer behavior, with the head of gaming at Amazon recently suggesting that increased expenses might push more individuals toward game streaming services instead of traditional consoles.
These price adjustments come at a challenging time for Xbox. Microsoft recently reported a dip in revenues across its gaming division. In July, the company underwent a significant restructuring of its Xbox division, which included workforce reductions affecting approximately 3,200 employees. This restructuring was described by executives as the "most significant restructure in Xbox history."
