'Best Medicine' Season 2 Promises New Twists, Romantic Entanglements, and Guest Stars

FOX's medical dramedy "Best Medicine" is set to return for its second season on Tuesday, September 22. The upcoming season will pick up after a dramatic Season 1 finale that left viewers with lingering questions about Dr. Martin Best's (Josh Charles) medical license, his complicated relationship with Louisa (Abigail Spencer), and the unexpected return of his ex, Eden (Eliza Coupe).

Season 2 will delve deeper into Dr. Best's professional challenges, particularly his struggle with a blood phobia that jeopardizes his career. He will be monitored by Parker (Jack Cutmore-Scott), a new character described as a charming professional who oversees Martin's medical compliance. Charles hinted that Martin may confess his phobia to the town early in the season, potentially creating further complications.

Eden's return to Port Wenn is intertwined with Louisa's IVF journey, and her presence is expected to stir up dynamics within Martin's personal life and his relationships with the townspeople. "She's rearranged his office, and I think rubbed a lot of the town the wrong way," Charles said of Eden's impact. "They certainly don't like what she's brought back out in Martin."

The central "will-they-won't-they" tension between Martin and Louisa is expected to continue, with Spencer stating, "That's what we hope to go on the journey of: Will they? Won't they? Watching two people to see what will happen..." Adding to the romantic complexities, Parker will also develop a connection with Louisa, further complicating Martin's life.

The series will continue to feature its signature quirky medical cases and town events. Among the storylines teased are a mermaid patient, a neck-up amputation, and pregnancy tests from men. The town of Port Wenn will also host events such as a karaoke night and a lobster crate race.

Esteemed actress Andrea Martin is set to join the cast as Judith, a quirky friend of Aunt Sarah (Annie Potts). Judith's smoking habits will present a health and safety concern for the town, requiring Martin and Sarah to intervene. Martin's addition to the show comes after showrunner Liz Tuccillo reached out to her, a longtime fan of Martin's work.

"What's beautiful about Season 2, is now we know all the characters," Spencer noted. Charles added, "Best Medicine Season 2: It's the best. Put life aside for a little bit and watch the people in this town, because it's part of the fun of it."

"Best Medicine" Season 2 premieres Tuesday, September 22, at 8:00 p.m. ET on FOX, with episodes available for next-day streaming on Hulu.
