Wynonna Judd Reveals Sisterly Rift: "We're Taking a Break"
The country music icon shared in a recent interview that she and her sister, Ashley Judd, are currently not in contact.
Wynonna Judd has disclosed a strained relationship with her sister, actress Ashley Judd, stating they are "taking a break" from each other. In a cover story for People magazine published Wednesday, the 62-year-old singer revealed that she and her younger sibling are not currently "connected."
"She’s doing her thing, and I’m doing mine," Wynonna told the publication, adding that Ashley has not yet heard her upcoming album, "The Hard Truth."
A representative for Ashley Judd did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
This reported estrangement comes more than two years after the sisters' mother, Naomi Judd, died by suicide in April 2022 at the age of 76. Reports at the time suggested the sisters were experiencing conflict over their mother's will, a claim Wynonna denied in October 2022.
At that time, Wynonna had spoken to People about the sisters' bond after their mother's death, describing it as "powerful" and stating they were "vulnerable with each other, and we’re tender." While acknowledging that they "disagree[d] on so much… as sisters," she expressed that they were learning they "have more in common than [they] don’t."
Wynonna noted in the past that she and Ashley, who did not attend Wynonna's 2012 wedding, had been "separated at age 14 and 18 by success" and "missed out on a lot of time together."
The singer did not specify whether her relationship with Ashley inspired her latest album, which she described as her "most honest and vulnerable." Wynonna did share that she believes her mother would find the album painful but acknowledged that Naomi knew her to be honest.
The album also touches on Wynonna's relationship with her estranged daughter, Grace Kelley, who is currently serving a 15-month sentence. Wynonna is raising Kelley's 4-year-old daughter, Kaliyah, on her farm with her husband, Cactus Moser.
Wynonna expressed that she "miss[es] her [Kelley] desperately" and hopes her daughter finds healing, urging her to "take a look at [her]self" following repeated arrests. Wynonna also stated she learned of her daughter's pregnancy and expected birth in jail through news reports and knows little about the situation.
