Wynonna Judd Comments on Kacey Musgraves' Christopher Columbus Remarks
Country music veteran Wynonna Judd stated that while Kacey Musgraves has the right to express her views, it may not always be the appropriate time or place.
Wynonna Judd has shared her perspective on Kacey Musgraves' recent on-stage criticism of Christopher Columbus, suggesting that while artists have the right to speak their minds, it's important to consider the context.
Musgraves, 38, called the explorer a "loser" during a concert stop in Dallas, coinciding with Indigenous Peoples' Day. When asked about the incident on a Fox News podcast, Judd remarked, "She has the right to do that, but that doesn't mean it's the right thing."
Judd emphasized her own approach to performing, stating, "When I go on stage, I'm keenly aware that people spend money on the ticket. And I never hear from my fans, 'Hey, would you come out and sing 'Grandpa' and tell me what your political view is?' My job is to be an entertaining person. My job is to show my gift and to let it trickle out into the audience and for them to connect with me and for them to go home feeling better than they did when they got there."
She added that music should be inclusive, stating, "Music is for everybody, that's what's so great." Judd has previously performed for multiple U.S. presidents and congressional bodies, underscoring her belief in music's universal appeal.
Columbus Day, observed to commemorate Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, has faced increasing scrutiny in recent years. Critics point to the historical mistreatment of Indigenous populations, leading to a growing movement to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day on the same date.
Indigenous Peoples' Day was first introduced in 1977 and has gained federal recognition, often celebrated alongside Columbus Day following a 2021 proclamation by President Joe Biden.
