Wyndham Clark on Accidental Engagement Spoil: "She Knows It's Happening"

Golfer Wyndham Clark has acknowledged that his public declaration of his intention to propose to his girlfriend, Emily Tanner, was an accidental spoiler of the surprise. However, he clarified that the engagement is still imminent and that Tanner is aware of his plans.

Clark initially spoke about his upcoming engagement in August after winning the BMW Championship, stating, "I’m going to be in Cabo next week. That’s my happy place. So I’ll be down there having fun. Presidents Cup; I’m playing a tournament in Japan; hopefully get engaged and then going to South Africa for a tournament as well."

When pressed by media at the Presidents Cup about whether his comment was a "slip-up," Clark confirmed it was. "Kind of. You know, what’s funny is, when they asked me, they were like, ‘What are you doing?’ And that’s what was on my mind, because that’s what I was really focused on. And I said that, and I was like, ‘Oh, boy,'" Clark explained, according to Front Office Sports.

He further elaborated that the element of surprise was somewhat diminished because Tanner had accompanied him to select rings. "But she also knew. We went and picked out rings and stuff. So she knows it’s happening. So it’s not that big of a surprise. But now, I’ve really got to try to disguise when I’m gonna do it," Clark added.

Despite the unintentional reveal, Clark maintained that the engagement would proceed as planned, stating, "Yeah. It will happen." He acknowledged that he now needs to be more creative in planning the moment of the proposal to maintain any semblance of surprise.
