Wreckage of Missing Plane Found Off Massachusetts Coast
A medical transport aircraft en route to Boston from Bermuda lost contact, and search efforts are underway for the six individuals on board.
The wreckage of a missing U.S.-bound plane has been located off the coast of Massachusetts as search efforts continue for the six passengers aboard. The aircraft, a Gulfstream G100 operated by Latitude Air Ambulance, lost contact with air traffic control in the early hours of Saturday.
The Federal Aviation Administration alerted the Coast Guard at 2 a.m. local time, prompting a search for the plane, which was traveling from Bermuda to Boston. The passengers included four Canadians and two Bermudian nationals.
"Coast Guard search crews located a debris field that has been confirmed to be associated with the missing aircraft," the Coast Guard stated in an update Saturday night. "Crews are continuing to search for the six people who were aboard the aircraft and the Coast Guard cutter William Sparling will continue search efforts throughout the night."
The Coast Guard has covered 1,644 square miles over 27 hours in the ongoing mission, which involves a multi-agency response including a Jayhawk helicopter crew, motor lifeboat crews, and aircraft from the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing.
Data from FlightAware indicated that the aircraft descended rapidly to approximately 11,000 feet from around 25,000 feet shortly after 1 a.m., with the last recorded signal around 1:30 a.m.
The Bermuda Government confirmed the plane was reported missing after losing contact with air traffic control. Officials stated they are in communication with the families of those on board and coordinating with U.S. authorities on the search operations.
