The United States has been eliminated from the World Cup following a 4-1 defeat to Belgium, a result met with widespread mockery internationally. The loss occurred amidst a controversy involving U.S. player Folarin Balogun, whose red card suspension was overturned after pressure from President Donald Trump.

Critics warned that the intervention compromised the integrity of the sport. The reaction from global observers, including an Iran FA spokesperson who stated the world was celebrating "politics' humiliating defeat by football," has been largely critical. Belgium's official social media accounts posted "Overturn this," reflecting their dissatisfaction with the reversal of Balogun's ban.

During the match, Belgium took an early lead in the ninth minute through Charles De Ketelaere, who scored again later in the game. Malik Tillman's deflected free-kick had brought the U.S. level. However, a goalkeeping error by Matt Freese allowed Hans Vanaken to score Belgium's third, and Romelu Lukaku sealed the 4-1 victory with a final defensive mistake. Lukaku's goal celebration, which appeared to mimic the "Trump dance," was noted by commentators, with one on Turkish television jokingly remarking, "USA is out of the World Cup... unless there's a last-minute change."

For many, the outcome was seen as a consequence of attempts to manipulate football's rules for political gain. President Trump is reported to have contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino three times after Balogun received a red card in a previous match against Bosnia-Herzegovina. FIFA subsequently suspended Balogun's automatic one-match ban for a year without providing an explanation, sparking outrage.

Trump, who was photographed with a red card at the White House during a 2018 meeting with Infantino despite claiming he did not know what one was, requested a review of the suspension. He argued that preventing a player from participating in an upcoming game, especially a key player, was "very unfair." Trump also questioned the integrity of the referee, Raphael Claus, who issued the red card, calling him "suspect." Claus had faced accusations of match-fixing in 2023 in Brazil but was not charged. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) defended Claus, stating he is an "exemplary professional."

Balogun himself acknowledged the controversy surrounding the overturned suspension. He stated, "When you know you're given a red card, and then you know usually the protocol is you don't play in the following game, and then when that decision's overturned, of course it's going to be controversial." He added that he did not have involvement in the process and accepted both the red card and the decision to allow him to play. Balogun expressed disappointment with the team's performance, noting, "Belgium were a better team today. They played much better than us. I feel today we didn't have a good game."

Numerous football figures expressed dismay at FIFA's decision. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp called the situation "madness" if Trump and Infantino had arranged it. UEFA described the move as "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable" and stated it "crossed a red line." Former England striker Wayne Rooney labeled the situation an "absolute disgrace," questioning the sportsmanship of the game, while former England international Roy Keane commented, "It seems unfair because it is unfair."

Even former FIFA president Sepp Blatter criticized the decision, asserting that "Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls. They are overturned by rules, evidence and independent bodies." Infantino, who has previously awarded Trump the "FIFA Peace Prize," defended FIFA's judicial bodies as independent and stated that their rulings must be respected. He confirmed discussing World Cup matters with Trump, as he does with other world leaders.

FIFA's official statement indicated that the implementation of the match suspension was suspended for a probationary period of one year, in accordance with Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. Meanwhile, the U.S. team's exit and the surrounding controversy have led to significant international commentary and ridicule.
