Worker Paralyzed After 30ft Fall Receives £10 Million Payout

Gavin Pugh was left paralyzed after falling 30 feet from a power line while dismantling a pylon in April 2022. The incident occurred because his safety line was clipped to a section of the pylon that was only secured at one end, causing the rope to slip loose. The fall resulted in severe injuries to his brain, neck, shoulder, ribs, and internal organs, necessitating lifelong wheelchair use.

Pugh, then 33, sued his employer, Wood Transmission and Distribution Ltd, after an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that adequate safety arrangements had not been in place. HSE inspector Robert Gidman stated that the "tragic incident" could have been prevented with proper risk assessment, work method consideration, adequate staffing, and clear procedures for transferring equipment between teams.

In 2024, the Cheshire-based firm was fined £240,000 at a magistrates' court hearing following the HSE's findings. Subsequently, Pugh initiated High Court proceedings. After out-of-court negotiations, a comprehensive care and compensation package was agreed upon, which Pugh's lawyers described as being worth "eight figures." This settlement covers his injuries, lost future earnings, and includes funding for 24-hour live-in care and over £1 million for rehabilitation costs.

Before the accident, Pugh was described as an "active and sociable person" who enjoyed his job and pursued hobbies like fishing. His injuries have resulted in significant physical limitations and psychological consequences. Pugh expressed gratitude for the settlement, stating it would allow him to regain some quality of life and return to some past hobbies, including fishing and socializing with friends.

Wood Transmission and Distribution Ltd, now operating as United Infrastructure Power T&D Ltd, has been approached for comment.
