Worcestershire sauce has emerged as the most mispronounced word in the United States, according to a recent analysis of Google Trends data. The condiment, originating from the city of Worcester in England, sparked approximately 321,600 monthly pronunciation-related searches nationwide.

The study, conducted by the online puzzle platform Unscrambler, examined Google Trends data from January 1 to October 10, 2026, focusing on queries such as "how do you pronounce" and "pronunciation of" across all 50 states. The analysis revealed that Americans frequently struggle with a variety of everyday words, from food items and foreign place names to brand names and even the names of some U.S. states.

Following Worcestershire sauce in the national rankings is "Gyro," the Greek pita dish, which garnered 290,400 monthly searches. The Mediterranean staple was identified as a particular point of confusion in Alabama, Indiana, Mississippi, and Missouri, where many residents reportedly pronounce it as 'guy-row' instead of the traditional 'YEE-roh.'

Rounding out the top three is the German dog breed "Dachshund," with 259,100 searches. This word proved to be a pronunciation challenge in states including Nebraska and North Dakota.

Other commonly mispronounced words that made the top five nationally include "Niche" (224,500 searches) and the German automaker "Porsche" (205,200 searches).

The report also highlighted instances where residents in certain states stumbled over the pronunciation of their own state names. For example, residents of Hawaii, Massachusetts, Oregon, and Nevada were among those leading searches for how to pronounce their home states. Ohioans, meanwhile, reportedly struggled with the pronunciation of "spaghetti."

Linguists suggest that the prevalence of mispronounced words can be attributed to the complexities of English spelling rules and the approximately 40 distinct regional accents found within the United States. These regional variations create different dialect and accent groups across the country, including in the West, Midwest, Southwest, and the distinct macro-region of Metropolitan New York City.

Beyond national trends, the report detailed the most mispronounced word in each individual state. For instance, in Alaska, "Juneau" was the most searched term, while Arizona residents frequently looked up "Saguaro." Idaho and South Dakota both identified "Worcestershire sauce" as their top pronunciation challenge, and residents of Wyoming and West Virginia struggled with "Dachshund." Conversely, states like Connecticut and Pennsylvania had "Water" as their most mispronounced word, and "Iran" was the most searched term in California, Kansas, and New York.
