Woolworths has introduced emergency kit checklists in its Queensland stores, advising shoppers on essential supplies to prepare for potential power outages, disruptions to water and gas services, and isolation due to severe weather events. This initiative, a collaboration with Get Ready Queensland, aims to help households assemble kits capable of sustaining them for three to five days, particularly as cyclone, flood, storm, and bushfire seasons approach.

The supermarket suggests that stocking emergency supplies year-round can prevent last-minute panic buying and ensure access to necessities when travel to stores may be difficult. Customers are encouraged to add one item at a time to their regular shopping trolleys to gradually build their kits, making the process more manageable for budgets. The checklists are available in-store to guide shoppers on what items to include.

While currently implemented in Queensland, the importance of having an emergency kit readily available has been noted by shoppers in other states as well. The Queensland government advises considering the specific needs of everyone in the household, including pets, when assembling a kit. For those in rural or remote areas, or those at risk of prolonged isolation, it may be necessary to prepare supplies for a longer duration.

Emergency kits should contain essentials such as first aid supplies, toiletries, a can opener, important documents, bottled water, non-perishable food items, a phone with a portable charger, wipes, gloves, a battery-operated radio, hand sanitizer, a torch, tissues, and batteries. Larger kits may also include pet supplies, tarpaulin, spare clothing, baby necessities, safety glasses, a whistle, warm blankets, prescribed medication, cash, a gas stove, a safety knife, and cooking equipment.

It is recommended to store the emergency kit in a strong, waterproof container in an easily accessible and safe location within the home, away from young children. Regular checks should be made to replenish used items and ensure all supplies are within their expiry dates. In the event of an evacuation due to severe weather, having a separate emergency bag ready for immediate transport is also advised. This bag should contain similar critical items, including medication, important documents, food, water, and charging capabilities for electronic devices.
