Woody Allen, 90, Seen in Madrid Ahead of Next Film
The director and his wife, Soon-Yi Previn, made a rare public appearance as he prepares to shoot a new romantic comedy in Spain.
Woody Allen, 90, was seen with his wife, Soon-Yi Previn, 55, in Madrid this week, marking their first public appearance together in a year. The outing comes as the Oscar-winning filmmaker prepares for his return to directing with a new film, provisionally titled 'WASP 2026.'
Allen and Previn, married for 29 years, were photographed walking hand-in-hand in the Spanish capital. Allen wore a blue shirt and chinos, while Previn sported a floral dress and sunhat.
The upcoming film, a romantic comedy written and directed by Allen, is scheduled to begin shooting on October 5 and will be set in Madrid and nearby Aranjuez. The project has secured €3 million in public funding from the Madrid Regional Government and Madrid City Council.
'I will be very happy to return to Spain,' Allen stated. 'This will be my third time filming there and my first opportunity to make a film in Madrid, a city I have always loved.'
Allen's last directed film, 'Coup de Chance,' was released in 2023 and received critical acclaim, earning $7.8 million at the box office. However, his 2023 appearance at the Venice International Film Festival to promote the movie was met with boos from those protesting allegations of sexual assault against his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. Allen has consistently denied these allegations and has never been charged or prosecuted.
In recent years, Allen's career has faced challenges, including the cancellation of a $68 million contract with Amazon Studios during the #MeToo movement and difficulties in securing distributors for his films. He has previously spoken about his marriage to Previn, who is the adopted daughter of his former partner, Mia Farrow. Allen and Previn first met when she was approximately 11 years old, while he was dating Farrow. Their relationship began in 1991, and they married in 1997.
Previn has publicly maintained Allen's innocence. Ronan Farrow, Dylan's brother, has written about the allegations and criticized Hollywood's continued work with their father. Their brother, Moses Farrow, has defended Allen, accusing Farrow of coaching Dylan's accusations. Allen himself has commented on his marriage, stating in a 2021 interview that his relationship with Previn felt natural and was not inappropriate.
