Woman With Incurable Cancer Holds Solo Wedding to Fulfill Dream

Amanda Barnes, a 49-year-old mother of two, recently celebrated a solo wedding ceremony, fulfilling a long-held dream to wear her ideal wedding dress and experience the joy of being a bride, even without a groom.

Barnes was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in October 2022, after first discovering a lump under her arm in October 2021. Doctors warned her that she might not live beyond March 2023. Facing a terminal diagnosis and uncertain about her remaining time, she decided not to wait for ideal circumstances. "There may not have been a groom, and that didn't matter, because there was no shortage of love," Barnes stated. "And I wore the dress of my dreams. My family and friends pulled together to make something I'd always dreamed about actually happen."

Barnes first noticed a lump in her left armpit in October 2021, accompanied by hot and cold spells and swelling in her left breast. Initial ultrasounds and scans in late 2021 and early 2022 came back normal. However, persistent feelings of exhaustion led her to undergo a biopsy in June 2022, which resulted in a diagnosis of stage three breast cancer the following month. A subsequent PET scan in October 2022 revealed that the cancer had already spread to her spine, leading to the stage four diagnosis and the grim prognosis.

Despite the progression of the disease, Barnes sought to live her life to the fullest. Radiotherapy helped shrink the tumors in her spine, and she continued with activities like hill walking, traveling, and spending time with her children, Connor, 20, and Ruby, 17. Further scans later showed the cancer had spread to her femurs and hips, and she began chemotherapy in March 2023. By August 26, scans indicated the cancer had also spread to her brain, and she lost sight in her right eye.

Barnes emphasized that she did not want cancer to dictate the remainder of her life. "Cancer has taken an enormous amount from me, but while I’m still able to make choices for myself, I don’t want it to take away my ability to enjoy being alive," she said. "Sometimes it takes all my effort just to get through the day."

In July, Barnes contacted her friend Jenny Hardy, and they began planning the solo wedding. Barnes found a fitted wedding dress with a long split at Prudence Gowns in Plymouth. She then spent the day being pampered, enjoying spa treatments, and a Sunday roast with her friends and family at the Ilsington Country House Hotel & Spa near Newton Abbot. Approximately 30 loved ones attended the celebration.

"It was absolutely fantastic," Barnes recounted. "I just wanted to fulfill one of my oldest and greatest dreams while I still could."

Footage of the event shared on TikTok by her friend Lucy has garnered millions of views. Barnes expressed surprise at the widespread attention, stating, "I certainly never thought millions of people would see me wearing that dress."

Barnes hopes her story inspires others to seize opportunities and live fully. "Take the trip. Wear the dress. Spend time with your children. Tell the people you love what they mean to you. Make the memory while you can," she advised. "This isn't really about my cancer diagnosis or my dress. It's about love, kindness, family, friendship, and being alive."

Barnes, a company director, has undergone extensive private cancer treatment funded by health insurance over the past four years. She continues chemotherapy at a Harley Street clinic and has established a GoFundMe page to assist with future treatment costs. "I’m just not ready to stop," she said.
