A woman who rescued a dog from a van during a heatwave became involved in a heated altercation with the animal's owner, who allegedly threatened her. The incident occurred on Wednesday, June 24, at approximately 1 p.m. in a B&M store located at Imperial Retail Park in Lichfield, Staffordshire.

The woman reported that she found the dog inside a car on the retail park's car park as temperatures reached 34C (93.2F). Believing the animal to be in distress, she removed it from the vehicle and brought it into the air-conditioned store, alerting staff. The owner of the dog subsequently confronted the woman inside the store.

Video footage of the encounter shows the owner accusing the woman of stealing his dog, while she stated she had "liberated" the pet from a hot car. The owner countered that a window had been left open. Another shopper reportedly accused the owner of committing a crime.

The confrontation escalated when the owner allegedly became aggressive and abusive, demanding the return of his dog and threatening to punch the woman. The woman, described as being in her 30s, was left shaken by the experience but was not physically harmed.

Staffordshire Police confirmed they were called to the scene and are investigating the incident. Officers have spoken with the woman and store staff, and are reviewing CCTV footage from the store. The force has appealed for witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.

The RSPCA advises that interior temperatures of vehicles can reach up to 47 degrees Celsius (116.6F) within an hour, even if windows are open or the car is in the shade, posing a significant risk to dogs.
