Woman Welcomes Twins After 13 Years and 20 Pregnancy Losses

Paramjit, 44, and her husband, Naminder, have spoken of their joy after welcoming twin daughters, Avnoor and Ajooni, following a 13-year journey marked by 20 pregnancy losses. The couple endured IVF, miscarriages, an ectopic pregnancy, and a chemical pregnancy before losing their twin sons, Amrit and Fateh, in 2018 due to severe pre-eclampsia. This loss left Paramjit feeling emotionally devastated and put a significant strain on their relationship.

"I felt like my heart had been ripped out of me," Paramjit recalled of the experience. "We were in a really dark place, it was like living at home with a stranger. We stopped talking to each other, we lived in silence for months, we became zombie-like."

The couple began trying for children shortly after marrying in 2009, when Paramjit was 26. Over the years, she described the constant emotional toll of each menstrual cycle and the pressure to start a family. IVF, a process she found isolating and difficult to discuss within her cultural context, also proved unsuccessful.

"Every time I got my period I felt crushed. Why hasn’t it happened? When will I get pregnant? Is it ever going to happen?" she said. "I felt under pressure to start a family and was desperate to become a mum."

After years of unsuccessful treatments and losses, the couple decided to stop trying. However, in 2022, following a pilgrimage to religious sites in India, Paramjit prayed for a child. A month later, she discovered she was pregnant. The surprise turned to shock when a six-week scan revealed she was expecting twins.

Paramjit admitted to being terrified that history would repeat itself, given the previous loss of her twins at nearly 20 weeks gestation. "On one hand I was elated. Two babies! A double miracle! After losing Amrit and Fateh I never thought I would get to experience raising twins. But here I was carrying multiples again. I told Naminder: 'God’s given me my twins back!'" she stated.

Her pregnancy was closely monitored due to her history of pre-eclampsia, and she received specialist care and medication, including aspirin and blood thinners. "I felt listened to, I felt like I mattered, my health mattered and my pregnancy mattered," she said.

At 36 weeks, Paramjit gave birth via planned Cesarean section to her twin daughters. Holding her babies for the first time was described as "the most amazing moment of my life."

The twins are now approaching their third birthday

Paramjit is sharing her story during Baby Loss Awareness Week to offer hope to others facing fertility struggles. "There can be hope, even in the very darkest moments," she said. "No matter how long and hard the journey may be, miracles do happen."
