A hiker sustained severe injuries after a grizzly bear attack in Montana last week, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP). The incident occurred on August 31 near Columbia Falls as the woman, identified only as Aubrey, was walking her dog.

FWP officials described the encounter as a "surprise, defensive event," noting the presence of at least one cub. Investigators found a whitetail deer carcass near the attack site, which they believe, along with the cub, may have contributed to the bear's aggressive response. The woman's dog, Frankie, was unharmed.

Aubrey was flown to Seattle for emergency surgery. An online fundraiser states her injuries are extensive and life-altering, and that she and her husband are facing a long recovery. FWP has indicated that no action will be taken against the bear involved in the attack.
