Woman Stabbed to Death in Random Attack While on Chipotle Break
Police have charged a man with first-degree murder in the apparently unprovoked killing of Jaquoya Wix in Detroit.
A 34-year-old mother was fatally stabbed in an alley behind a Detroit Chipotle restaurant while on a work break, in what authorities described as a random and unprovoked attack. Jaquoya Wix was killed on Sunday afternoon, according to police and her family.
Devon Jason Watson, 42, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Wix's death. Police stated that Watson, who has a history of mental health issues, allegedly attacked Wix without any prior interaction. Her sister, Alicya Wix, told FOX 10 that the crime was senseless and questioned the motive behind the attack.
Witnesses from a nearby restaurant rushed to Wix's aid and pursued the suspect, assisting police in his apprehension. Investigators reportedly used surveillance camera footage to track and arrest Watson. He was denied bond at an arraignment on Wednesday.
Watson has previous assault convictions in Wayne County, Michigan, in 2010, and in Louisiana in 2024, according to reports.
Friends and family gathered at the Chipotle to honor Wix, remembering her as a vibrant woman who loved fashion and makeup. Her obituary described her as bringing "warmth, style, glamour, humor, and generosity" to the lives of those who knew her. She was also remembered for her resilience and caring nature.
Wix is survived by her 15-year-old daughter, whose father died several years ago. Her family is now focused on supporting her daughter during this difficult time.
