Woman Shares Harrowing Journey Through 20 Pregnancy Losses to Welcome 'Miracle' Twins

Paramjit, 44, and her husband, Naminder, have shared their story of enduring 20 pregnancy losses over 13 years, culminating in the birth of twin daughters Avnoor and Ajooni in their forties.

The couple began trying for a family shortly after marrying in 2009. Their journey was marked by multiple miscarriages, an ectopic pregnancy, a chemical pregnancy, and unsuccessful IVF attempts. The profound loss of their twin boys, Amrit and Fateh, in 2018, after Paramjit developed severe pre-eclampsia, left them devastated.

Paramjit described the emotional toll, recalling thoughts of not wanting to survive and feeling like her heart had been ripped out. The trauma strained their relationship, leading to a period of silence and emotional distance between them. She described herself as feeling "dead inside" and "like a dead person walking around."

Throughout their fertility struggles, Paramjit felt immense pressure and desperation to become a mother, with each menstrual cycle bringing crushing disappointment. The IVF process, which she described as feeling like being a statistic and a taboo subject within her culture, also led to heartbreak with failed embryo transfers.

After years of treatments and losses, the couple decided to stop trying for a child. However, in 2022, following a pilgrimage to religious sites in India where Paramjit prayed for the chance to be a mother, she discovered she was pregnant.

In 2022, after travelling to India and visiting religious sites like Hazoor Sahib and Amritsar, Paramjit prayed: 'If I have a child, if you think I am worthy of being a mum, I will bring my child back here.' A month later, something extraordinary happened: Paramjit was pregnant.

At a six-week scan, she was astonished to learn she was expecting twins again. The joy was mingled with terror, given their history. "God’s given me my twins back!" she told her husband, while simultaneously fearing a repeat of past tragedies.

Paramjit's pregnancy was closely monitored due to her history of pre-eclampsia. She received specialized care, including medication like aspirin and blood thinners, and consistent support from specialist midwives. This careful management allowed her to attend the hospital whenever she felt concerned, giving her a sense of being heard and valued.
