Woman Sentenced for Killing and Dismembering Abusive Husband

A woman who killed and dismembered her abusive husband will spend an additional 12 months in jail, after pleading guilty to excessive self-defense.

Nirmeen Noufl, 55, was sentenced on Friday after admitting in August to killing her husband, Mamdouh, during an incident where she said he was choking and assaulting her. Noufl has been in custody since her arrest in October 2024, initially charged with murder before prosecutors accepted the lesser charge.

Crown prosecutor Mark Hay informed the court that the disposal of Mr. Noufl's body necessitated the acceptance of Noufl's account, preventing a murder charge. Justice Peter Hamill stated that while a history of extreme domestic violence mitigated the seriousness of the killing, the dismemberment was a significant factor in the case. "The conduct after the killing is remarkable and chilling... and is also relevant to issues such as remorse," Justice Hamill said.

Noufl's sustained history of abuse from her husband, which culminated in the fatal stabbing, was a key consideration. "This was a gravely abusive relationship featuring violence, psychological manipulation and coercive control," Justice Hamill stated.

The judge acknowledged that members of Mr. Noufl's family might be disappointed with the sentence. "I hope all of you understand... there will seem to be a gap between the loss you have suffered forever and the sentence I impose," the judge said.

According to the agreed facts, Mr. Noufl held conservative Islamic views and was controlling of his wife and daughters. Days before his death in their Greenacre home, he informed Noufl that he planned to marry another woman he had met in Egypt, denying Noufl's request for a divorce.

When he returned home later that day, an argument ensued, during which he assaulted her, pinning her to the ground and choking her, Noufl later told psychiatrists. "All my life... he just treated me like shit, spat at me," Noufl said to a confidante after the killing. "I had enough."

Noufl dismembered her husband's body with a saw and disposed of it in multiple garbage bags across southwest Sydney. His body was never recovered, and her claim of stabbing him once in the chest could not be verified.

One of Noufl's daughters told the court that she would cancel her flight abroad and remain in Australia to support her mother in attending psychiatric appointments upon her release. "If she were to be released tomorrow, I would cancel my flight back," the daughter stated.

Noufl will be eligible for parole in October 2027.
