Woman's Frightening Hotel Encounter Sparks Debate on Solo Travel Safety
A man's persistent attempts to contact a woman in her hotel room after a brief elevator chat has highlighted concerns about boundaries and safety for solo female travelers.
A woman traveling alone for work reported a frightening experience in her New York hotel room after a stranger she briefly encountered in an elevator located her room number and repeatedly called her, eventually slipping a handwritten note under her door.
The interaction began with a less than a minute of small talk in an elevator, during which the woman learned she and the man were staying on the same floor. Shortly after returning to her room, she received four consecutive calls from an unknown number, followed by a note inviting her to meet him for a drink at the hotel bar.
The message, which included the man's phone number, left the woman feeling so uncomfortable that she remained on FaceTime with her boyfriend throughout the night.
Her boyfriend later shared the incident online, expressing concern that the man's actions had crossed a boundary by waiting until his girlfriend was in her private room before attempting further contact. He emphasized that he would not have minded if the man had expressed romantic interest during their initial brief conversation, but found the subsequent actions unsettling.
"Leaving the note was the biggest flag for me," he stated. "I wouldn't think he was a creep if he asked her during the short conversation in the elevator, but waiting until she went into her room is what crossed the line and made her feel extremely uncomfortable."
In response to the unsolicited contact, the woman's boyfriend messaged the number left on the note, stating, "I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't call my mine and my girl's room, or leave messages under our door like that. There's no need to respond. Just back off now."
The woman reported the incident to hotel staff, who arranged for her to move to a different room. According to the boyfriend, the man had checked out of the hotel the following morning. The hotel also provided the woman with a complimentary drink.
The incident triggered discussions online about women's safety while traveling alone, with many commenting that the most unsettling aspect was the stranger knowing the woman's exact location within the hotel.
Women shared similar experiences and safety precautions they take when traveling solo or feeling vulnerable. Some suggested being cautious about revealing one's hotel floor to strangers in elevators and advised positioning oneself near the door controls for easier access to emergency features.
One woman recounted a distressing experience with a landlord who allegedly became increasingly intrusive after she rejected his romantic advances, escalating to him entering her apartment and leaving notes, including one suggesting he had been watching her sleep.
Safety advice for solo travelers typically includes avoiding sharing room numbers with strangers, reporting any unwanted contact to hotel management, and requesting a room change if a guest feels unsafe. It is also recommended that guests inquire with hotel management about how their room was contacted, especially if calls appear to have been routed through the hotel's system.
