A woman has shared her story of heartbreak and betrayal after her husband of 20 years confessed that he is gay and had been having affairs with other men for nearly a decade. The author, whose name has been changed to Catriona McGuire, described the moment her husband, Chris, revealed his secret life during a romantic cruise in Italy.
"I thought I had the perfect marriage," Catriona wrote. "Then my husband of 20 years revealed he'd been sleeping with men for a decade."
During the cruise, Chris admitted to using the gay dating app Grindr to meet men on board the ship. He confessed to having sexual encounters with another man for five consecutive nights while Catriona slept in the same cabin. The deception continued even after they returned home, with the affair persisting for another month and a half.
The Confession and Its Aftermath
Chris's confession came on a July night in 2023. "I can't be with you any more," he told Catriona, before delivering the devastating blow: "I'm gay."
Catriona's world shattered as she learned Chris had been using Grindr since 2014, meaning his infidelity had spanned nine years. He also admitted to having had male lovers in their home, though he claimed he never brought them into their marital bed.
"His betrayal went to the very heart of who he was as a person," Catriona explained. She noted that even her gay friends had no inkling of his sexual orientation. She also discovered that Chris had affairs at particularly sensitive times, including before their 12th wedding anniversary, when her mother was dying, and while she was battling breast cancer.
Catriona learned that Chris had confided in 11 friends about his plans to leave her for a man. She also found evidence of his affairs, including sexual health testing cards. One card revealed that on their 12th anniversary in 2018, when Chris claimed to have an important meeting, he was actually attending an HIV evaluation. Another from 2016, during Catriona's breast cancer treatment, showed he had received hepatitis vaccine injections, indicating his sexual habits put him at risk.
A History of Deception
Catriona, now 60, met Chris in 2003 when she was 37 and he was 20. She had recently lost her only child to a brain tumor and was a single mother. Chris pursued her, and they married in 2006. Catriona consistently earned more than Chris, supporting his career and their comfortable lifestyle, which included designer clothes, an expensive home, and lavish travel.
She recalled signs that, in hindsight, pointed to his secret life. Chris developed a phone addiction, and when questioned, he promised he would never cheat. Later, their sex life declined, and Chris claimed to be asexual. Catriona eventually issued an ultimatum for him to seek counseling, but he refused, stating she would have to leave him. Catriona, still in love, could not bring herself to end the marriage.
Chris also became increasingly conscious of his appearance, indulging in Botox and beauty treatments. Catriona supported him through anxiety and depression, paying for private healthcare.
Moving Forward
After her mother's death in 2022, Catriona and Chris took their ill-fated Italian cruise. The day after Chris confessed, Catriona asked him to leave their home. The divorce process has been contentious, with Catriona spending significant legal fees.
Chris is now engaged to the Canadian man he met on the cruise. Catriona, who is now happily single, stated that while her husband's betrayal was devastating, it ultimately set her free. "The day he smashed my world apart made me free," she wrote. "It led me to become myself again. It has led me back to happiness."
