Woman Punished for Unprovoked Dog Walker Attack

A woman has been sentenced for an unprovoked assault on another dog walker, which left the victim with a black eye and feeling fearful. Lucie Marsh, 25, attacked Lisa Wood in Canterbury, Kent, on March 2 after Ms. Wood attempted to separate her German Shepherd from Marsh's two aggressive dogs.

During the altercation, Marsh grabbed Ms. Wood by the hair, pulled out her AirPods, pushed her, and then punched her multiple times. She also spat in Ms. Wood's face, an act described by the prosecution as aggravating the offense. Ms. Wood, a midwife, suffered scratches and whiplash in addition to the black eye, which required her to take four weeks off work. She stated in a victim impact statement that she now feels "scared of my own shadow" when walking her dog.

Marsh pleaded guilty to assault by beating and being the owner of a dog dangerously out of control. At Margate Magistrates' Court on September 9, CCTV footage of the incident was presented.

Marsh's defense highlighted her significant attachment to her dog, Enzo, whom she acquired after her sister's death and considers an emotional support. She stated she acted to defend her dogs. Marsh expressed deep regret and shame for her actions, noting she had sought therapy and undergone dog training, with Enzo now walked on a lead and muzzle. Marsh also has a history of childhood trauma.

Magistrates imposed a six-month community order requiring Marsh to complete 15 rehabilitation sessions. She was fined £50 for the dog control offense and ordered to pay £300 in compensation to Ms. Wood, along with a £115 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs, to be paid at a rate of £20 per month. The court opted not to issue a destruction order for Enzo.
