A 70-year-old woman opened fire inside the lobby of the Port Orange Police Department in Florida on Thursday morning before being shot by responding officers. No officers or civilians were injured in the incident, according to Port Orange Police Chief Manuel Marino.
The woman entered the department's main lobby shortly after 8 a.m. and brandished a handgun at civilian staff working at the front records section. She remained in the lobby for several minutes before firing a round in the direction of the staff. "A call went out over the radio, referenced an active shooter or shooting in progress," Marino said.
Officers who responded to the scene confronted the woman as she exited the front lobby. The chief stated that the woman was still holding her firearm when officers encountered her, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Her name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Three officers were involved in the incident, but none sustained injuries. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. Officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community and that all department personnel are safe.
