Peta Wilkinson mortgaged her home to fund the business dream of her then-boyfriend, Sean Lewis. When the venture failed, Wilkinson found herself caught in legal proceedings initiated by creditors seeking to recoup their losses. The NSW Supreme Court justice determined that Wilkinson had been kept in the dark regarding the financial situation and Lewis's handling of her legal affairs.
Lewis, a former Royal Australian Navy engineer, had worked as a real estate specialist. In 2024, he became a principal for Professionals real estate in the Hunter Valley, with Wilkinson as his business partner. Despite her significant financial risk, the court found that Wilkinson was under the impression that Lewis was managing her legal interests.
The judge's ruling aimed to prevent the plaintiffs from proceeding against Wilkinson, acknowledging her lack of awareness concerning the extent of the financial dealings and her exposure. This decision protects her long-time family home from being seized to cover the collapsed business's debts. Wilkinson had expressed fears of becoming homeless due to the situation.
Lewis is reportedly required to repay $290,000 to a retired couple. The court's intervention underscores the complexities of financial partnerships and the legal ramifications when one party is not fully informed of the risks involved.
