Woman Loses Half Her Body Weight Using Traditional Methods
Chanelle Cross sheds 10 stone without weight-loss injections by focusing on diet and exercise.
Chanelle Cross, a 36-year-old mother of two from Nottingham, has successfully lost nearly half her body weight, shedding 10 stone over the past year. Her transformation occurred without the use of weight-loss injections, relying instead on traditional methods such as keeping a food diary and increasing physical activity. Cross's journey began when her weight reached 20 stone and 0.5 pounds, affecting her mobility and confidence. A diagnosis of plantar fasciitis, a painful foot condition, served as a catalyst for her to make significant lifestyle changes.
Previously, Cross struggled with comfort eating, regularly consuming crisps, chocolate, ready meals, and full English breakfasts. She had tried various diets in the past, including calorie counting and carb restriction, but found them difficult to maintain due to a large appetite. The motivation to achieve lasting change intensified after the birth of her two children, Melody, six, and Alistair, three. "I was tired of being in pain every day and not being able to walk, but it wasn't until after having my two children that I finally had the motivation," she stated.
Cross found support through her local Slimming World group, accessing a free 12-week membership voucher provided by Nottingham City Council. She described the group environment as encouraging, with members working towards shared goals. "This time was different though. My mental and physical health was at an all-time low and I wanted to be the best version of myself, not just for me but for my family too," she said.
Key to her success was keeping a detailed food diary, which helped her identify unhealthy eating patterns and plan meals and snacks in advance. She began incorporating healthier snack options like fruit and Slimming World Hi-fi bars when out with her children. Her dietary overhaul included swapping sugary cereals and full English breakfasts for overnight oats with berries and honey, and replacing ready meals with home-cooked dishes such as Korean-style beef noodles, homemade pizza pasta bake, and Jamaican-style patties with homemade chips.
Cross noted that these changes improved her relationship with food, allowing her to track intake without strict calorie counting. "Instead of grabbing whatever's easiest, I make sure I have healthy options ready for the week. I'm keeping track of what I eat, without having to count my calories or measure everything I eat and it's so freeing," she explained.
Exercise also presented a challenge, particularly due to her foot pain. However, she discovered enjoyable activities, including dance fitness videos, which made staying active more appealing. "I used to hate exercising and the pain in my foot made it difficult. But Slimming World’s active lifestyle programme helped me see exercising can be fun if you find the right activity for you," she said. As her weight decreased, her foot pain improved, enabling her to engage more fully with her children and daily activities. Cross now fits into a size 10 dress, feeling happier and more energetic than before.
