Tessa Parry-Wingfield, 48, initially attributed a change in her sight to needing stronger contact lenses. However, this seemingly minor issue was a symptom of ocular melanoma, a rare form of cancer that ultimately led to the loss of her eye.

Parry-Wingfield first noticed the change while jogging in March 2023. She experienced a subtle shift in her vision, which she dismissed as a need for updated prescription lenses. Believing her eyes ‘felt fine’ otherwise, she delayed seeking professional advice. The NHS recommends eye tests every two years, but millions of adults reportedly miss these routine check-ups.

Upon visiting her optician, a scan revealed an unusual 'freckle' at the back of her left eye. She was subsequently diagnosed with ocular melanoma. This type of cancer affects approximately 600 people in the UK annually.

Parry-Wingfield now wears a custom-made prosthetic eye designed to match the color and details of her remaining eye. She noted that having only one eye impacts depth perception. Her experience serves as a cautionary tale about the potential severity of symptoms that might seem insignificant, emphasizing the need for timely medical attention.
