Woman Killed by Falling Tree During Hurricane Isaias; Husband Used Apple Watch to Call for Help
A Florida woman died when a tree fell on her home during Hurricane Isaias, trapping her husband, who used his Apple Watch to summon aid.
A Florida woman, Jenn Biggs Williams, 57, died Saturday when a tree crashed through her Pensacola home's roof during Hurricane Isaias. Her husband of 10 years, Joey, was trapped beneath the wreckage.
Joey Williams, whose legs were crushed, was unable to reach his phone but managed to crawl free after 20 to 30 minutes. He then used his Apple Watch to contact his son as the storm raged.
The hurricane made landfall in the Florida Panhandle near Destin on Friday night as a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. While its winds weakened to 85 mph within 30 minutes, the storm continued to cause destruction along the Gulf Coast.
More than 418,000 homes and businesses in Florida and Alabama lost power, with approximately 300,000 customers in Florida experiencing outages. Terrifying footage emerged of widespread damage, including the roof of the Rest and Relax Inn in Pensacola being torn off by high winds.
First responders found Williams unconscious with no pulse. In an interview, her husband described her death as "pretty instant" and recounted being allowed a final goodbye before her body was taken away.
He described Williams, who worked in human resources, as a "loved" and "ultra-nice badass person." The couple had been married for 10 years. Her death was one of four fatalities attributed to the storm, which also left other individuals injured.
