Woman Found in Burning Van Was Pregnant; Man Charged with Murder

A murder investigation is underway after a 35-year-old woman, identified as Samantha Natalie Phythian, was found in a burning van in Prestatyn, North Wales. Emergency services responded to reports of the vehicle fire around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. A post-mortem examination revealed that Ms. Phythian, from Rhyl, was pregnant at the time of her death, according to police.

Thomas Bell, 38, also from Rhyl, was arrested on Monday, October 5, and subsequently charged with murder. He appeared in Mold Crown Court via videolink on Friday and was remanded in custody. The court heard that the victim was believed to have been alive when the van fire started, and the defense's case is that Bell did not start the fire.

Judge Geraint Walters stated that the victim was "alive at the time, or at least sufficiently alive and she was killed as a result of the arson itself." The case has been adjourned to January for a plea and trial preparation hearing, with a potential trial date scheduled for three weeks in April of the following year.

In a tribute, Ms. Phythian's family described her as a "much-loved mum, daughter, sister, auntie and friend." They expressed their devastation at her "tragic and untimely death" and asked for respect and mindfulness regarding rumors circulating on social media.

Detective Chief Inspector Zoie Dunkerley echoed the family's sentiments, urging the community to be cautious about comments that could cause further distress or interfere with the legal proceedings. Councillor Gerry Frobisher of Prestatyn Town Council commented that such an incident is unprecedented in Prestatyn and reassured residents that it appears to be an isolated event.
