Woman Found Dead, Man Injured in Axe Attack in Dartmouth; Suspect Arrested
A murder investigation is underway after a woman was found deceased and a man sustained facial injuries in what police are investigating as an axe attack in the seaside town of Dartmouth, Devon. A suspect has been arrested.
A woman in her 40s was found dead and a man, also in his 40s, suffered facial injuries following a violent incident in Dartmouth, Devon, on Tuesday night. Police responded to the Church of St Barnabas building at approximately 9:20 p.m. after reports of a serious disturbance.
A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. Authorities have stated that the victim was allegedly attacked with an axe.
The injured man was transported to the hospital, where he received treatment for non-life-changing facial injuries. Paramedics and the air ambulance were also present at the scene.
Detective Inspector Guy Biggar of Devon & Cornwall Police Major Crime Investigation Team confirmed that the investigation is in its early stages. "We appreciate the concern this distressing incident may have caused with the local community but there is nothing to indicate a wider threat to the public," he stated.
Police are appealing for information and urging the public not to speculate about the incident, particularly on social media, while inquiries continue. The victim's family has been informed and is being supported by the police.
Forensic officers were observed at the scene on Newcomen Road, which was closed off as the investigation proceeded.
The Church of St Barnabas, which has previously served as a restaurant and more recently as a homeless shelter, is located in the town center. A local business owner commented on the prevailing rumors of an axe being used in the attack, describing it as "sickening."
