Woman Flies Across Globe for Man Met on Dating App, Only to Be Ghosted Upon Arrival

A woman from Los Angeles traveled to London to meet a man she connected with on Tinder, only to be informed upon her arrival that he still had feelings for his ex-girlfriend. Zena Wozniak, 37, detailed her experience in a viral post on Substack.

Wozniak met the man, who used the pseudonym Charlie, on Tinder in 2022. He was based in England, but he visited San Francisco for a work conference, and they met. They spent a weekend together, described by Wozniak as a whirlwind, which included multiple dates and intimacy. She found him to be the "most attractive" and "most emotionally intelligent" man she had encountered.

Charlie then visited Wozniak in Los Angeles for another few days. Following his departure, Wozniak found herself unable to stop thinking about him and began planning a six-week European vacation, which would include a visit to London. She contacted Charlie, asking if she could stay with him for a week.

He extended the invitation to ten days, suggesting a weekend trip to Kent, which he described as his favorite place. Wozniak prepared rigorously for the trip, focusing on fitness and appearance. She also noted that while they had been in frequent contact leading up to her Spanish leg of the trip, his communication had become distant as her arrival in London neared.

Despite her growing unease, Wozniak attributed it to insecurity. The night before her flight to London, Charlie messaged her, requesting her flight information to pick her up at the airport, which temporarily eased her worries. However, upon landing, she sensed something was amiss. She described his demeanor as terrified and anxious.

After they arrived at his apartment, Charlie revealed he could not proceed with the planned week together. He cited work-related stress as a reason, explaining that while their time in California had been positive, he was not in the same headspace. He admitted he had been agonizing over how to tell her and had considered calling in advance but decided against it.

When Wozniak pressed him for more information, Charlie confessed that he had recently encountered his ex-girlfriend at a party and had realized he still cared for her deeply. He offered her the use of his apartment for the duration of her stay, stating he would be staying elsewhere, but he could not be with her.

While disappointed, Wozniak stated she preferred receiving the news in person. "After years of being digitally ghosted by men, it was a strange courtesy to be sitting across from him having a frank discussion face-to-face," she wrote. She stayed in his apartment for three days before moving to a friend's place. He reportedly stayed at his parents' spare flat.

Later that week, Wozniak observed that Charlie's location on his Tinder profile had changed to Kent, the area he had planned to take her. She speculated that he had gone there with his ex-girlfriend, which further compounded her heartbreak. Following a brief exchange about returning his keys, they ceased all contact.
