Woman Finds Biological Father After Decades-Long Search Inspired by 'Mamma Mia'

Janette Croft, 50, embarked on a decades-long quest to identify her biological father after her mother revealed there were three possible candidates. The search, which mirrored the plot of the musical 'Mamma Mia,' began when Janette noticed her distinct auburn curls differed from her sister's fair hair, sparking suspicion about her paternity.

Her mother provided three potential fathers: Robert, an ice cream man; Terry, a market stall owner; and Charles, whom she met at church. Janette's initial efforts involved searching the Yellow Pages for Robert and Terry, as her mother could not recall Charles' surname. Her search proved challenging, described by Janette as "like looking for a needle in a haystack."

After finding Terry's number, Janette contacted him. Despite initial denial, he agreed to a DNA test, which unfortunately did not result in a match. The search entered a hiatus for 13 years until Janette's partner purchased an Ancestry DNA kit. Janette submitted a sample, and while the matches were not close relatives, she sent messages inquiring about Robert or Charles.

Her efforts seemed to reach a dead end until her 26-year-old daughter received a message from a woman named Gemma. Gemma explained that Janette appeared as a DNA match and bore a strong resemblance to her "Uncle Bob," who was an ice cream man. Upon seeing photos of Bob, Janette felt an immediate connection, recognizing him as her father.

Further photos revealed that Bob's sister and niece shared Janette's characteristic red curly hair. However, the news was bittersweet, as Gemma informed Janette that Bob had passed away less than a year prior. It was discovered that the surname Bob had given Janette's mother belonged to his grandparents, which had hindered Janette's search.

Despite not meeting her father, Janette was put in touch with Bob's best friend, who shared details about his life, including his love for motorbikes, Guinness, and Chinese food, which Janette also enjoyed. In August 2023, Janette met Gemma and Bob's sister, Bez. Janette expressed a sense of peace now that she knows her biological father's identity and has connected with her extended family.
