A woman was beaten to death inside a communal bathroom at a Santa Monica residential care facility on Saturday, marking the city's fifth homicide of 2026. This figure already surpasses the four murders recorded throughout all of 2025.

Santa Monica police responded to The Manor, an Adult Residential Facility located at 1905 Pico Blvd., around 5:21 p.m. after receiving a report of a woman in need of medical attention. Officers discovered an adult woman with severe injuries. Paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors reported that the woman was found unresponsive after an attack in a communal bathroom. Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of death. By 8:45 p.m., police announced that a male suspect had been taken into custody. Investigators have not identified the suspect or the motive for the attack, but officials stated that no additional suspects are being sought.

The homicide is being investigated as such by detectives and forensic personnel.

The Manor, which has been in operation since 1965, provides room, board, care, and supervision for adults with mental illness and developmental disabilities. The facility is licensed by the California Department of Social Services’ Community Care Licensing Division and is described as an Adult Residential Facility, distinct from conventional housing.

This incident occurs amidst a notable increase in law enforcement activity across Santa Monica. Data from the police department indicates 2,656 arrests were made through July 4, representing a nearly 70% increase compared to the same period last year. Officer-initiated activity also rose by 27.5%, despite a 4% decrease in calls for service from residents.

The facility is located across the street from Santa Monica College and has reportedly been a frequent source of police calls, according to neighbors.
