Woman Falls for Viral Video, Travels to Wrong North Carolina Town

A woman from Florida has shared her embarrassing travel blunder after mistaking a viral TikTok video of Switzerland for a location in North Carolina. Olivia Garcia traveled to Gastonia, North Carolina, in 2022 after seeing a video posted by travel vlogger Zachary Keesee, which showcased a picturesque, snow-capped mountain landscape. The on-screen text of the video indicated the location as 'Gastonia, North Carolina.'

However, the stunning scenery was actually filmed in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. Garcia, who was traveling with her family in the Carolinas at the time, was so impressed by the video that she suggested making a detour to Gastonia. "I was like, 'oh wait can we make a pit stop in this place called Gastonia because I just saw this TikTok and it looks so pretty," Garcia told WBTV News. Upon arrival, Garcia found the reality of Gastonia to be significantly different from the video's depiction, describing the area as rundown with non-functional gas station bathrooms.

Keesee later apologized to Garcia for the misrepresentation. Despite the mix-up, Garcia expressed that she wasn't overly bothered, acknowledging that one should not believe everything seen online. She also stated a willingness to return to North Carolina to explore its actual attractions.

The unusual travel mistake gained widespread attention after the clip resurfaced on X, formerly Twitter. The viral nature of the story even caught the notice of Gastonia's then-mayor, Walker E. Reid III. "Apparently we are the Talk of the Town! And while Gastonia is certainly not Switzerland, we're glad people are learning more about our Great City," Reid commented at the time. He added, "We're glad to see so many people having fun with Zachary Keesee's post and hopefully Ms. Garcia will come back to see all the great things our city has to offer." The mayor even offered to give Garcia a personal tour of Gastonia.

The incident sparked various reactions on social media, with some users questioning how one could confuse a North Carolina town with the Swiss Alps based on a map. Others expressed disbelief at the level of misidentification.
