Woman Faces Terminal Cancer and Husband's Betrayal
A woman undergoing IVF treatment discovered she had terminal cancer and subsequently learned her husband was having an affair and left her.
Danielle Salazar's journey to have a child through IVF took a devastating turn when doctors discovered she had terminal cancer. While undergoing treatment for a tumor on her left ovary, Salazar learned her husband was having an affair and ultimately left her.
Salazar, 39, from Forks, Washington, began IVF with her husband in 2022. During the process, doctors identified a 10cm growth on her ovary, which she had previously been diagnosed with as a cyst related to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Despite initial assurances that surgery was not medically necessary, Salazar felt compelled to have it removed. Upon waking from the procedure, her doctor revealed the growth was not a cyst but a tumor.
She was referred to oncology in Seattle for further operations aimed at preserving her fertility. However, her oncologist eventually informed her that a hysterectomy was necessary to save her life. In December 2023, surgeons removed her fallopian tubes, ovaries, womb, cervix, part of her omentum, and a portion of her bladder wall, ending her chance to carry a child and inducing menopause.
Although initially declared cancer-free, by late 2025, Salazar began experiencing symptoms including nausea and fatigue. A January 2026 CT scan and blood test revealed the cancer had returned and spread. Her diagnosis was updated to stage IV low-grade serous carcinoma with metastasis to her peritoneum and lymph nodes. While medication initially suppressed the tumors, it has since stopped being effective. The tumors are surgically inoperable due to their attachment to vital organs. Salazar was given an estimated 18 to 36 months to live when she first received this diagnosis.
The emotional toll intensified in August when Salazar was informed of her husband's affair, with video evidence provided. Confronted, he did not deny the infidelity. Salazar, who was visiting her brother in Arizona at the time, ended the relationship over the phone and has not seen him since. She immediately filed for divorce, expressing shock at the betrayal from her partner while facing a terminal illness.
Despite these hardships, Salazar is focusing on making the most of her remaining time. She has spent recent months traveling and connecting with other cancer patients, aiming to live her life as fully as possible and inspire others to do the same.
