Woman Ends Uber Ride Early After Driver's Request to Charge EV and Missed Exit

A woman's late-night Uber trip took an alarming turn when her driver requested to stop at a parking garage for 15 to 20 minutes to charge his electric vehicle, according to a TikTok video she shared. The passenger reported that the vehicle had 43% battery life and she was approximately 25 minutes from her destination.

Her concerns escalated when the driver missed an exit, leading her to question their intended route. "I don’t want to get into a random parking lot with you," the woman stated in the video. "You also just missed the exit."

Following the incident, the woman ended the ride and contacted the police. Uber confirmed to Fox News Digital that the company investigated the report and took appropriate action. "Everyone deserves to feel safe and comfortable when using the Uber platform," an Uber spokesperson said in a statement. The company highlighted its safety features, including an emergency button, GPS tracking, and the ability to share trip details with contacts.

Rideshare safety experts emphasize the importance of passenger vigilance. Dillon Abend, founder and CEO of the rideshare safety app 3rd-i, noted that unexpected route deviations can cause anxiety, particularly for solo travelers at night. He advises passengers to share their location and trip details with a trusted group of three to five people.

Before entering any rideshare vehicle, Abend recommends confirming the license plate and ensuring the driver and vehicle match the information provided in the app. The What’s My Name Foundation, established after a tragic incident involving a rideshare mix-up, promotes a four-step safety protocol: Stop, Ask, Match, and Inform (SAMI). This involves pausing before entering, asking the driver for the passenger's name, matching the vehicle's license plate, and informing a contact about the trip details. The foundation also helped implement a four-digit PIN system for Uber and Lyft as a two-step authentication to verify the correct ride.
