An adopted woman named Abigail, from Yorkshire, experienced an emotional reunion when she read a letter from her biological sister, Melissa. Melissa had initiated a search through the program "Long Lost Family" to find Abigail, her older sister, with the hope of reuniting their family before their mother, Linda, who has Alzheimer's disease, further declines.
Linda became pregnant with Abigail, whom she named Rachael, at the age of 15. Facing the disapproval of her traditional parents, she was sent to a mother and baby home where Abigail was born and subsequently placed for adoption. Despite having a positive adoption experience, Abigail had often thought about her birth mother since her teenage years.
Eight years prior to the program's airing, at age 57, Linda was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's. She is now nonverbal and uses a wheelchair. Melissa, Linda's second eldest child, expressed her desperation to find Abigail, stating that it was a "last ditch attempt in the time that my mum's still got." She hoped that a reunion would bring comfort to their mother.
When contacted by the program, Abigail, who is a mother of four, readily agreed to participate. She was informed of her birth mother's dementia diagnosis before meeting presenter Nicky Campbell. Abigail shared that she had always wondered about her birth mother and was delighted to see a photograph of Linda and to learn that Melissa had been searching for her.
Abigail expressed her eagerness to meet her sister, believing it would be "the start of something amazing." Campbell then presented her with a letter from Melissa. Upon seeing the beginning of the message, Abigail asked if she had been called Rachael. The letter read: "Dear Rachael, I have known about you since I was around ten years old. We've often wondered how your life has been and hoped that one day we might be able to find you. I wanted you to hear from me how loved you've always been. With love, Melissa."
An emotional Abigail responded, "That's wonderful."
